Dong Xi Residential Complex, Taichung City

The Eastern District of Taichung City was an older city district that had fallen behind the times in comparison to other urban areas. New building has accelerated over the past few years especially since the opening of the new Main Station in that district. However, the urban landscape was still bleak and dominated by concrete.

The brief comprised the greening of the Dong Xi Residential Complex. The buildings formed a large, enclosed courtyard that offers good environmental and noise protection from the surrounding heavily trafficked streets. The greening response was to add significant amounts of urban forestry which will create a sustainable oasis of heathy tranquillity to the area, as well as air pollution filtering and thermal shadowing in the climatic conditions.
