In 2022, Portugal recorded 157 drowning deaths — the highest number in 18 years. While many associate Portugal’s coastline with maritime accidents, the majority of these drownings occurred inland, in unsupervised areas such as rivers, dams, and river beaches.
In response to this growing public safety concern, a new project by the design group is applying design thinking to transform former military technologies into life-saving tools. Specifically, sea-going drones — originally developed for defense — are being reimagined for civilian use in rescue and lifesaving missions.
This shift from weapons to rescue reflects the power of design thinking in driving innovation with a human focus. By repurposing existing technologies for peaceful, life-affirming roles, the project aims not only to reduce drownings but also to demonstrate how thoughtful design can help meet urgent social needs. These drones can be rapidly deployed to remote or hazardous locations, reaching victims faster than traditional rescue teams.
