Global Direction Awards Announces the 2026 Sustainable Excellence Award Winners
As the world faces growing uncertainty—from geopolitical tensions and economic shifts to natural disasters that remind us how vulnerable communities can be—the Global Direction Awards (GDA) announces the winners of the 2026 Sustainable Excellence Award.
On the 28th of July, a powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture, causing deaths, injuries, infrastructure damage, and major disruption. Events like this, alongside global political and economic changes and market volatility, can leave people feeling that the future is increasingly difficult to predict.
But sustainability is about preparing for uncertainty—not simply reacting to it.
The 2026 Sustainable Excellence Award winners demonstrate how thoughtful design, science and collaboration can protect the environment while creating healthier and more resilient communities.
NutriLoop™ — Skåne Lantbruksforskningsgrupp
NutriLoop™ rethinks agricultural pollution by treating excess nitrogen and phosphorus in waterways as resources rather than waste. Its biodegradable modules capture nutrients before they reach rivers, allowing them to be recovered and returned to agriculture as organic fertiliser. The project turns pollution into a circular resource and offers a practical vision for protecting freshwater ecosystems, including the Baltic Sea.
PhoenixFoam — Regenerative Forest Systems (CRFS)
Led by Prof. Sofia Almeida, Dr. Miguel Correia, Dr. Aiko Matsumoto and Dr. Wei-Lun Chen, PhoenixFoam changes the role of firefighting foam. Made from renewable and biological materials and free from PFAS, it suppresses wildfires and then supports soil recovery, moisture retention and forest regeneration. Instead of viewing firefighting as the end of a disaster, the project makes it the beginning of ecological recovery.
Environmental Information Network — Central IT - UXD Team & Environmental Risk Monitoring Team, HON HAI TECHNOLOGY GROUP (FOXCONN)
Created by TzuPei Chen and LiFang Wan, the platform transforms complex environmental data into clear, actionable information. By connecting sensors, drones, 3D mapping, alerts and ESG management, it helps executives, managers and frontline teams respond to environmental risks faster and more effectively.
Jury Insight
The GDA jury highlighted a shared strength across all three projects: they do not treat sustainability as a slogan, but as a practical way to redesign systems. NutriLoop closes resource loops, PhoenixFoam helps nature recover after disaster, and Environmental Information Network turns information into responsible action.
Together, they demonstrate an important principle for uncertain times: protecting the planet, supporting justice and peace, and building long-term economic prosperity are not separate goals. They are connected.
The Global Direction Awards congratulates the 2026 Sustainable Excellence Award winners and invites the world to recognize innovation that helps create a safer, more resilient and sustainable future.
